Buying A New Netbook,Deal or No Deal

The Netbook History

The emergence of portable and affordable laptops these days are usually attributed to the One Laptop per Child project (OLPC). It oversees the creation of simple, low-cost, and low-power laptops which will be used as educational means for the less fortunate children of the developing world. Computer companies obviously provided innovations for the said project, but the technology produced proved to be prolific in several markets aside from the OLPC.

In 2007 Asus released the Eee PC - a small form-factor laptop which was originally designed for emerging markets. In 2008, after several companies followed suit, netbooks became a category of their own. Along with its increase in market sales overtaking even that of laptops, there has also been a growing popularity and influx of web-based applications and mobile internet networking. As of today, netbooks generally use either netbook-specific Linux or Windows XP operating systems.

Use your PDAs safely

new Form factors (pda)Personal digital assistants (PDAs)- such as the Palm, iPAQ and Blackberry-and other mobile devices have quickly become indispensable corporate tools. They are ubiquitous-and vulnerable.

Your PDA needs security. How much? That depends on how you use it. PDAs are often as powerful as some computers, they can store megabytes of data, and they pose many of the same security risks as PCs. They should be secured just like full-size computers.

IPDA4n the past a PDA communicated only by synchronizing with a PC on a local port. Nowadays, many PDAs have full wireless capability that can be used to send and receive –mail and txt messages just like desktop computers. If that data is confidential, secure it.

If your PDA was issued to you by the company, it is corporate property, to b used primarily for business purposes. If you use it for personal purposes, remember that management has the right to inspect it a any time. Don’t expect any personal privacy.

In addition, realize that the company issued the PDA for your use only and you shouldn’t lend it to others. If you do, you can’t control how they will use it or any confidential data on it.

pda2.jpgMobile devices allow us to take information wherever we go. But their portability makes them a popular target for thieves. Physical security is paramount, since a PDA can disappear in an instant. Be careful where you store your PDA. When you are away from your desk, either lick it or keep it with you.

The main threat to the sensitive data stored on your PDA is physical loss of the device. If you ever lose it, good security on it will ensure that no one can access the confidential data. If like most people, you store personal information on your PDA, good security will also ensure that no one can use the data to steal your identity, use your credit cards, or open your files.

Her are some things to keep in mind with your PDA:

PDA1Think big when you go small: PDAs require just as much security as full-size PCs. Store it carefully. Lock it or keep it with you at all times.

Use passwords and encryption on your PDA when possible: if you lose it or it’s stolen, you can still keep others from accessing any confidential data and any personal information.

Use wireless security when sending confidential data: PDAs can b even more vulnerable than desktop computers when sending and receiving e-mail and txt messages Use you PDA care fully. If you don’t need the wireless connectivity of your PDA, disable the auto connection feature. This ensures that your wireless device doesn’t connect to the network unless you want to connect.

Are you an Ipod Mania? Read This…

IPod is a brand of portable media players designed and marketed by Apple and launched on October 23, 2001. The line-up currently consists of the original style hard drive-based flagship iPod classic, the iPod touch, the mid-level video-capable iPod nano, and the low-end screenless iPod shuffle. Former products include the compact iPod mini (replaced by the iPod nano) and the high-end spin-off iPod photo (re-integrated into the main iPod classic line). iPod classic models store media on an internal hard drive, while all other models, aside from the Microdrive-based mini, use flash memory to enable their smaller size. As with many other digital music players, iPods can also serve as external data storage devices.

The name iPod was proposed by Vinnie Chieco, a freelance copywriter, who (with others) was called by Apple to figure out how to introduce the new player to the public. After Chieco saw a prototype, he thought of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey and the phrase “Open the pod bay door, Hal!”, which refers to the white EVA Pods of the Discovery One spaceship. Apple researched the trademark and found that it was already in use. Joseph N. Grasso of New Jersey had originally listed an “iPod” trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in July 2000 for Internet kiosks. Apple’s iTunes new software is used to transfer music to the devices. As a jukebox application, iTunes stores a music library on the user’s computer and can play, burn, and rip music from a CD. It also transfers photos, videos, games, and calendars to those iPod models that support them. Apple focused its development on the iPod’s unique user interface and its ease of use, rather than on technical capability. As of October 2007, the iPod had sold over 119 million units worldwide (stated in “The Beat Goes On” conference) making it the best-selling digital audio player series in history.

The iPod Classic has a metal face, not a plastic one. The shiny, curved chrome-like backplate is still there, but now it’s attached to an anodised aluminium sheet that curves gently forward before forming a flat space in which the display and clickwheel are mounted. The second-generation Apple iPod Nano sports a seamless construction and a scratch-resistant aluminum body in a variety of colors. The unit retains its slender shape yet should be more durable sans the seams. The Apple iPod Nano supports photos, album art and offers strong sound quality. Apple’s range-leading and video-capable iPod - the succinctly named, er, iPod - has been replaced by a model said to have a 2.5in screen that’s 60 per cent brighter, yet offers longer battery life. Versions in two hard-disk capacities (30GB/80GB) are available now and each can be ordered in white or black. The 30GB model (189/$240) is reckoned to run for up to 14 hours playing music and 3.5 hours playing video. Apple announces the availability of its 1 GB digital music player, iPod shuffle, in five new colors: blue, pink, green, orange and the original silver. The half a cubic-inch iPod shuffle holds up to 240 songs and is now available in all five colors for USD 79.
